Template for Parents of Those Under Age Twelve:

Dear (Hairdresser's Name),

My child has an issue that is sensitive and makes her feel very uncomfortable about getting her hair cut.

She has a problem that you may never have heard of, but is very important for you to understand.  It is called Trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling).  This means that she pulls hair from her (head, eyebrows, eyelashes--- fill in this area with whatever is appropriate).

Approximately 5% of the population (or up to 15 million Americans) suffers, usually in silence, because of the social stigmas associated with behavioral problems.  The cause(s) of compulsive hair pulling is not well known and there are many different theories about its origins.

Please be sensitive to her situation and don’t ask her questions or confront her about this issue publicly.  It is difficult enough being in an environment where others might notice her (bald patches, lack of eyebrows, etc.).
Our family is working to find a solution and you can assist by helping her to look the best that she can at this time.

If you are interested in learning more about trichotillomania and recommendations for hairdressers, please read the article that I have included with this note.

Thank you.
